Silk Scarves & Shawls – Remove Stubborn Stains Safe and Fast!

After a fabulous night out on the town, you indulge in a hearty early-afternoon breakfast of champions at your favorite local diner. As you are enjoying those delicious home fries, you dribble a nasty dollop of ketchup on your favorite silk scarf. Suddenly the heavenly breakfast you just scarfed down (no pun intended) has filled you with panic. There are two questions on your mind right now: 1. How can I remove ketchup from a silk scarf without ruining it? And 2. Be able to wear it out again tonight?

Without this particular scarf, no outfit is complete. Somehow this seemingly carefree accessory has become a phantom limb and you absolutely cannot live without it. That may be taking it a bit far; however, a part of you certainly feels stripped without it.

Panic no more, and follow these 8 steps to remove stubborn stains from your silk scarf safe and fast :

  1. Check if the dye in the silk is colorfast. After what you’ve just been through you certainly do not want all the dye running out of your scarf. Take a corner of the scarf and run it under water. If the color doesn’t run, your scarf is colorfast. If the color does run, you’ll have to soak the whole scarf in a tub with a liter of water and a handful of rock salt. I’m afraid you’ll have to leave it over night.
  2. After ensuring the scarf is colorfast, soak the silk scarf in lukewarm water with a mild, natural soap for 5 minutes, no more.
  3. While you are soaking, rub the stained area very gently with the soap water.
  4. Remove the silk scarf from the soap water tub. Rinse the soap water out of the tub and fill with water and 40ml of vinegar. Rinse the silk scarf in this water-vinegar mixture to remove the soap and restore the silky sheen and luster to your silk scarf.
  5. Rinse in cold water for a final rinsing.
  6. To wring out the excess water, spread the silk scarf out on a thick towel. The towel will absorb the excess water gently, so as not to distort the shape of your silk scarf.
  7. While still damp, place your silk scarf in a plastic bag. Put the plastic bag containing your silk scarf inside the refrigerator for 30 minutes.
  8. Remove the plastic bag from the refrigerator and lay your silk scarf out on an ironing board, or make-shift ironing board. Iron your silk scarf on very low heat to gently press the fabric. Make sure to iron the inside of the scarf; this is usually the side with the tag on it.

Voila. Luck for you, silk is fast-drying so you should be back in style by dinner tonight!
